Breaking off a Piece

When Jon is satisfied whith his piece he breaks it off the end of his rod.  Using a kitchen butter knife he taps at the point where his rod is joined, this cools and cracks the glass holding on the rod, and the piece lands on his break off pad which is  made from heat resistant kevlar and other non flammable materials.
